In order to achieve faster club head speed and more powerful positions, you need to build one thing. Or rather two. Your legs. By building stronger legs, you can generate more ground force and in turn, more club head speed.
When building your leg strength, there is really one king of the exercise. The Squat. Variations include the back squat, the front squat and the goblet squat. When choosing the best of these variations for golf you need to consider the positions we aim to achieve in the golf swing. The back squat, with a barbell across your shoulders, behind your neck, requires more angle between your legs and torso than are required from a golfer. The front squat is better suited, with a more upright trunk and focus on positioning, than the back squat. Finally the goblet squat offers a perfect blend of strength and mobility.
The goblet squat, utilising a dumbbell or kettlebell held under the chin, builds strength in the legs whilst focusing on mobility and form over pure strength. The goblet squat also protects the back and hips from injury, ensuring you can spend more time on the course and less time in the rehab room!
