Now that the summer months are behind us and we are entering the latter months of the year. The evenings will start getting darker sooner and all talk of Halloween and Christmas will be rife before you know it.

With this in mind, you may now think that your days of being able to play golf in the glorious sunshine are behind you for another year. But we’re here to tell you that is definitely not the case.

From installing an at-home golf simulator system to simply carrying on visiting your local golf course, playing golf in winter can actually be an incredibly enjoyable thing to do, offering much quieter courses, clear winter mornings and better deals.

There are a few things you should and shouldn’t do during the winter months though, which we will take a look at in further detail below.

Do: Keep Playing

 Whether you keep attending golf courses through the winter months, practice your swing using a golf simulator system or try to improve your putting game around your house, the most important thing you can do over winter is to keep playing golf

The last thing you should want, after all, is for your swing to go rusty or to lose all the momentum you had been building throughout the summer.

Only by staying invested and keeping on practicing will you be able to improve your game, let alone maintain it until the better weather rolls around again.

Don’t: Wear The Wrong Clothes

 If you are planning on still attending your local golf course throughout the winter, it’s important to make sure you are wearing the right clothing.

Golf is well-known for its wacky attire but, during the colder spells, keeping your muscles warm is imperative to protecting yourself from injury.

Clothes and accessories like wet weather gloves, thin base layers and thermal socks are all must-haves, not only helping keep your hands warm and dry but also ensuring your movement isn’t overly restricted by wearing too many layers.

Do: Invest In At-Home Equipment

 The combination of the darker evenings and the generally poorer winter weather can make it more difficult to attend the golf course as regularly as you would like.

So, as an alternative measure, why not consider investing in a few pieces of at-home golfing equipment to use when the weather turns nasty?

Golf simulator systems, for example, are a great way to improve your long game, with certain systems like the Optishot simulator able to analyse your swing to guide you on what you could improve.

Practice nets and enclosures are also a great way to practice during the winter, removing the need to head to the local driving range and, therefore, potentially saving you a lot of time and money.

Don’t: Use Cold Golf Balls

 Throughout the golfing world, it is widely believed that a golf ball will carry two yards shorter for every ten degrees the temperature drops.

Therefore, if you find yourself playing in particular cold conditions – whether that be in an outside mancave, garden or golf course – keep your balls in your pocket with a hand warmer to ensure they’re as warm as possible.

Alternatively, consider investing in golf balls that have been specifically designed for use in colder weather.

Do: Read & Watch

There is a lot about golf you can learn without actually getting up off your sofa, swinging a club or hitting a ball.

By simply reading a few instructional books or analysing how the professionals do it on the TV, you can pick up a lot of hints and tips to take with you whenever you’re next able to practice.
